YouTube x Coachella

Plus: Disney follows Netflix, and celeb-backed sim cards

YouTube is covering the whole of Coachella. This is why its important.

  • YouTube is going big on Coachella: “multiview concert experience…up to 4 of the live stream stages on their TVs at once while listening to the audio of their choice…exclusive custom merchandise via YouTube Shopping from Coachella”

  • Noone really needs to watch 4 live concerts when you can only listen to one. It works with sports, but probably not for music.

  • But for YouTube this is all about the live factor. YouTube wants more TV subscribers. It wants in to your living room. And live events is the passport.

  • So the hype, the partnership with Hypebeast (for behind the scenes footage) and the exclusive merchandise is all about pushing the TV service, with its wide ranging functionality, to younger audiences

Are the golden days of password sharing finally over?

  • The last decade saw billions being poured into video streaming services as everyone chased down Netflix and the old TV giants realised traditional business models were in decline

  • Cue sh*tloads of great content and a flurry of promotional offers to get you subscribing. Oh and if you don’t fancy subscribing, you could easily borrow your mate’s password

  • Those good old days are coming to an end. First, the cheaper priced tiers started coming - ads were back. Next, comes the crackdown on password sharing - as usual, Netflix blazed the trail (with great results) and now Disney are following suit

  • Its not clear when its coming to the UK, but expect to have to tell your parents to get their own Disney+ account within the next 12 months…

  • Yes, Taylor is in there having just made billionaire status last year. But she’s dwarfed by the likes of Jay Z, Oprah, and George Lucas

  • Savvy investments and mega content franchises are the name of the game: Spielberg is #2 on the list, with $4.4bn, after negotiating revenue shares and equity stakes in his films 👌

Startup watch: Meet PassionFruit

🎯 Looking for: Investment - £200k pre-seed round

👥 Founders: Matthew Hewston, Dan Malone, David McElligott

⛺️ Pitch: The world's first platform for creator-branded mobile networks. For Fans: compelling mobile bundles and benefits crafted by their favourite creator. For Creators: a predictable, profitable and scalable revenue stream which amplifies their brand.

😎 Our take: The creator economy is booming (old news) and finding ways to create more value from these individual brands is the future (newer news). You've heard of creators launching merch and doing deals with streaming services. But what about launching their own branded mobile sim card? Becoming a 'mobile virtual network operator' (MVNO) is becoming easier through the introduction of eSIMs (virtual sim cards) and increasing compatibility across smartphones, but there is still a lot of backend management required. PassionFruit steps in here, taking care of all of the admin and integrations, whilst enabling the creators to focus on promoting and incentivising uptake. Massive potential 👍
